GOOD SPORTS IN ATOM HOCKEY - 10 A.M. - APRIL 14
By Cam Tait (Edmonton Journal) 04-14-2009 Good News!!!
Now, this is a great story about sportsmanship from the NE 167 Northstars atom team. The nine- and 10-year-olds won a silver medal in Quikcard Minor Hockey Week, a gold in the city championship, and gold medals in two other tournaments.
They were also true champions during the weekend, and didn't even play in the championship game.
The team entered the 18th annual Braves/Raiders spring tournament but was not entered in the appropriate division. After winning each of their first two games handily, coach Tim Young put the players in different positions.
After winning their third outing 9-3, Young decided the team would not play in the gold-medal game.
"Instead, they recognized the efforts of the teams they played, and allowed the second- and third-place teams to play for the gold," said parent Kelly de Jong. "I would like these young players to know how impressed I am with this decision." Before the gold-medal game, the Northstars were presented with sportsmanship medals.
"With all their gold medals this year, this medal of sportsmanship is so much more meaningful," said de Jong. "My son, Carson, will never forget this tournament."
So what inspired coach young to make the move?
"I don't know what inspired me to make the final decision," he says. "I just knew it was the right thing to do.
"Once my assistant coach Paul Muleri brought up the idea, in my mind there was no going back or even thinking twice about pulling out of the tournament.
"I knew if we explained it the best way we could to everyone, they would all understand. I'm not going to lie to you, there were some confused or unwillingly parents at first.
"Then, when all that emotion filled that hockey rink at the end of the game ... we all knew it was a great choice for everyone!" |
